The next installment to a greener you is here! It is so easy to get caught up in labels when grocery shopping. I admit I have been that person. Phrases like all organic, no preservatives, hormone free, free range, etc. all grab my attention. I think I am making a smarter, healthier decision by buying these products. But am I really? Not always according to Deirdre Imus. Her book, The Essential Green You, breaks it down for us. Seriously good information to keep on hand when grocery shopping!

What you want:

Grass Fed or Pasture Raised-This means the cow was actually raised grazing on its natural diet instead of grains. “Grass fed beef is one of the most sustainable and healthy meat products your can buy”, she says.

Certified Organic-This label is only used on meats and dairy that meet US organic standards. The animals feed on natural organic grass or grain that is not enhanced in any way.

Fat Free-These foods, like milk and cheese, are lower in saturated fats.

Certified Humane Raised and Handled-This label means the animals were raised humanely, in their natural environment with natural grazing behaviors. They are not fed any hormones or antibiotics.

All of these labels are what you want to look for when shopping for eggs, meats and dairy. Even other products. However don’t be fooled. There are some labels you don’t want to fall for. The following labels are what you want to stay away from.

Free Range– The USDA allows this label to be placed on chicken that has some access to the outdoors each day. It does not require that they get a specific amount of time outside or that they live in a cage free environment when they are not outdoors.

Antibiotic Free-This term only means that the hens were not given antibiotics IF it is also labeled as certified organic. If it is not, your chicken may have been injected with antibiotics!

No Additives-This means that there were no additives applied to the eggs themselves. It does not mean the chickens were fed organically, cage free, antibiotic free or hormone free. Scary right? This also goes for labels that read No Hormones Administered or No Chemicals Added.
